What is a good way to obtain PCC - India?

Friends,
What is a recommended way to obtain Police Clearance Cert. from India. We live currently in US. Should one go thru embassy or thru friends/relatives in India who could get one? Generally how much time does it take in both cases. Appreciate if you could share your thoughts and experiences on that.

I was able to get my Indian PCC in 1 day (this was in 2002). I dropped the passport, relevant application and fees in the morning at the Washington DC consulate and was able to collect the passport the same evening with PCC stamped in the passport and a letter issued by the consulate. I guess if you sent it by mail to the consulate it will take longer.
