What happens with my current work permit if I get a new one?

I currently have an open work permit, ending on Apr 2014 (IEC, 1 year).

I want to apply to a new one (locked to a future specific employer), I don't need a LMO as I am under the NAFTA Agreement.

Let's say I apply In January, and, I may get the answer in February. What happens between that time and April? My Old work permit is gone? Can I have a work permit starting on April?

AFAIK, you will have to mention about your current Work Permit, so, most likely, they will give it to you from April.
