Hi everyone,

Here's our issue: I'm Canadian, sponsoring my Australian husband who lives here in Canada with me on working holiday visa. We are applying outland via Sydney Australia Office. Sent in our application July 2014... in November 2014 we received the email saying that "Decision Has Been Made" - we just had to send in a few passport pictures etc, for final approval, and so we did.

It's been nearly 6 months since then, and we've heard nothing via email, nor received anything in the mail (neither here in Canada, or to my husband's parent's house in Australia). The Sydney office will only take enquiries via email but only if you're beyond average processing time, which is 14 months, so they have not replied to our requests for info. Several calls to the Canada office have been incredibly unhelpful, until just now.... we FINALLY got someone to look into the file and tell us that the Confirmation of Permanent Residency was in fact confirmed and mailed to his parent's house in Australia in December 2014. But still told us that there was nothing they could do, and that we have to get in contact with Sydney Office.

Okay, well obviously his parents don't have the COPR papers, either because they lost it or it got lost in the mail. But here's the big problem. The "Decision Made" email says that our COPR (implying we should have received it) is only valid until May 22nd 2015!! Which is three days from now!! So there's really nothing we can do, since we don't have the COPR papers, and no one from Sydney will answer us.

The reason it is expiring on that exact date, we presume, is because it was exactly one year prior (May 22nd, 2014) that my husband did his medical exam.

So we're in a bind!! Our question is... does ANYONE know what happens in a situation like this?

Once we finally get ahold of Sydney, what are they going to say? Will they say "just redo your medical exam and we'll reissue your COPR"? Or will we have to do the entire application all over again? (DO NOT WANT!! :'( )

Are you near a land border by chance? If you are, perhaps you could ask the CBSA if they could be of any help, since they would probably see, in their system, that it was in fact issued.

Good luck!

Thanks Ponga.. unfortunately we aren't close enough to just pop on down easily... it is a bit of an ordeal to get there. My husband did ask the Canadian Office agent this (whether he could just go to the border and they'd have the info in their system to issue the Permanent Residency), and they said no, you need to bring the physical COPR papers :/

Here's a post from someone that was in a similar situation and...as usual, throwing more money at the problem fixed it [for them]:

Good luck!

Oh okay, that's really helpful! At least it sounds like COPR can be extended and replaced with a bit of money & new medical exam. Thanks so much Ponga!

Why did you not take the matter further months ago by contacting your MP? I suggest you do so ASAP.
