Awesome! Thanks. I will share this with my lawyer.

You can change your last name on your PR card even after you land. You may not get to change the first new PR card as it reflects what's written on COPR. However you should be able to change your name legally after the initial PR card.

But first you need to change other government issued IDs to new marriage name first such as driver's licence, provincial health card, SIN, and the like. This will help support your reason to change your name on PR card.

The only concern I have about changing your name on your PR card is that it won't match the name listed in the passport unless the passport is also changed to married name. I wonder if you would get into problems trying to board a flight back to Canada with a passport name that doesn't match the PR card name.

I got to say that it is rather stupid to say that your name on PR card must remain the same for the rest of your life. It really hurts PRs that get married while living in Canada and want to change their last name.

What if they don't bother getting Canadian citizenship but decided to stay PR. One can easily get a name change on a Canadian Passport by providing a marriage certificate to show last name change for passport.

If you are going to change your PR card name, you would need to change your foreign passport name as well or at least have your foreign passport officially state your marriage name on it somewhere.

You will always have your original birth certificate with your maiden name on it. So you got something to prove your maiden name if you ever need to change it back to your maiden.
