Hi,

I am a 20 year old butcher from the UK and have been working in Vancouver BC under a work permit for just under a year now, and would like to apply for permanent residency. I was wondering what the likelihood of me acquiring a visa would be, particuarly with consideration to these new laws? I'm very confused about this whole process. Would it be better to apply under BC's PNP as I already have a permanent job offer, or would my profession not be included within such a program?

Finally should I apply to extend my work permit before applying for PR from within Canada, as the process is apparantly very lengthy?

I would greatly appreciate any help you could give me.

The fastest and best way for you it to ask your employer to help you apply for residency through PNP. As a butcher, you are considered a skilled worker. Another option for you is to wait until you have been in Canada for 2 years and then apply under Canadian experience class. If your work permit is about to expire, you should extend it. If you are staying with the same employer, you have implied status while you are waiting for your extension to go through and can continue working.

There are no new laws on PNP and CEC, only for skilled worker applications.

You can find BC PNP here: http://www.aved.gov.bc.ca/provincialnominee/welcome.htm
and Canadian exeperience class if you go that way here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/cec/index.asp
