Hi All,

We have applied for OHIP and we were told we will be eligible after 5-Aug'16. However we are travelling back to India and will come back mostly in October or November.

Will we still be able to go and collect the OHIP ?

Please advise!

Thanks
Prash :)

You will not be eligible for OHIP until 3 months after you return back to Canada in Oct/Nov and settle here permanently. So that will be sometime in Jan/Feb 2017.

Read here: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/publications/ohip/ohip_eligibility.aspx
you are in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date you establish residence in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residence);

Rob_TO is right.

If you leave for more than 30 days in the first 6 months after registering health care, you are no longer eligible and will have to re-do the 3 month waiting period. Be honest with OHIP and tell them that you are leaving. Do not pick up your health cards and start using them as soon as you are back. If they find that you were not eligible, they could charge you with fraud.

hi,

So can I remain in Ontario for 153 days in a 6 months period and then go out for more than 30 days my coverage will still remain active right? I am also new applicant but I will stay in Ontario for more than 153 days and then go out for around 30-40 days after my 153 days as a new applicant is complete. Am I good? thanks

Yes, that is ok. It's 153 days for the first 6 months and after that it's 153 days for every 12 so you are fine even if you leave for more than a month after spending 153 days.
