Toronto and the surrounding areas no longer has capacity in their shelter systems. Unfortunately many are being refused housing. This article is for Toronto but this is impacting many other regions who are overwhelmed by the large number of refugees needing temporary housing. If at all possible please try to connect with groups that may be affiliated with your home country, your religion, any friends or family in Canada to try and secure temporary housing before coming to Canada or delay your travels in the hopes that this may be resolved somewhat soon.

The housing subsidies are no longer available because the money had all been used which is one of the reasons that many refugees are moving out of the shelters. Many of the hotels that were funded by the federal government in places like Windsor, Niagara Falls, etc. are being closed down because funding has run out placing further pressure on municipal homeless shelters.

They are not stop spreading false information. All areas are facing huge pressure on their shelters systems because of the number of refugees or asylum claimants using the system and the increase in homelessness in general and the federal government has stopped providing funding to the majority of regions. Please do not make false promises that housing is easy to get and free shelter on arrival is guaranteed. There were hundred of asylum claimants living outdoors in Toronto this months and apparently in other suburbs of the GTA as well although the numbers of asylum claimants being denied shelter beds and sleeping rough were much lower in the suburbs than in Toronto. Many municipalities are following Toronto’s lead and saying that they are no longer able to accept asylum claimants into their shelter systems (which are usually at 100% capacity in municipalities) without more funding from the federal or provincial governments.

Most of the world is facing the same problems. Low interest rates for a long period of time and lax lending laws are some of the big reasons that housing costs are too high in addition to not constructing enough housing over the past 30-40 years while increasing immigration. You can find the same issues in Europe, Australia, etc. Healthcare issues also similar in many countries. Infrastructure growth has not kept up with the growth in populations. We don’t train enough GPs and don’t pay them enough, we don’t train enough nurses, imagining techs, surgical staff, PSWs and pay them enough. We don’t have enough money allocated into the budget and not enough staff to run operating rooms at capacity and doctors are only getting a fraction of their desired OR time. There aren’t enough LTC beds or money spent on homecare to allow people to leave the hospital beds that we need so a large portion of a hospital’s beds have seniors waiting for spaces in longterm care or waiting to be able to get enough services at home. Our population is ageing and people are able to live longer while having more complex medical histories. I could go on but that is a small overview.
