Hello everyone. I'm 16 years old and living in Costa Rica. My parents were deported when i was about 3 years old (I was born in Canada). Now that I'm older I want to go to Canada but my parents don't want to let me go (my mother and stepfather). I'm having problems at home...my father hates me and mistreats me (he's very aggressive verbally and physically). My mother just ignores everything that is happening and doesn't care. I've been wanting to leave home several times before. I want to go to Canada to study and live there (to actually have a future) and I have family over there that are willing to help me and look after me. My real father (lives in Costa Rica as well) wants me to leave Costa Rica as soon as possible. Is it possible for me to leave Costa Rica or do I have to wait until I'm 18 (which I don't want to do because I'll miss high-school and it'll be very hard for me to catch up and pay for)?

Didn't your cousin post here asking about your case just a while ago? Although she said you were 17.

I suppose that legally, you have to stay with your mother until you are 18. However, could you go to child protective services or any other such agency, complain that your mother is mistreating you and ask to live with your father? If you can do that, your father could allow you to go to Canada.

If you run away from your mother and go to Canada on your own, I do not know what she could do about it. I suppose she could report it to the police and make an international case of it (want to be famous?) but I have no idea if a.) The police in Costa Rica would care to help her or b.) if the police in Canada would send a 16 yo. back to Costa Rica. Would the police in Costa Rica return you to your mother if you left her and went to stay with your father? If not, they probably wouldn't care either if you went to Canada. Do you want to give it a try?
