My husband is from England and I am in Canada. We got married in September of 2016 and sent our application for family class sponsorship - spousal sponsorship from inland in Canada on November of 2016. We have received notification that our application has been received as of December and is currently being processed. We have also applied for a work permit in January of 2017 and are waiting for this to come be processed as well.

In the meantime, my husband has got word from his family that his father is in the hospital and is only given hours to live. I have read several postings about people being able to leave the country, but re-entry is a risk. We have spent a lot of money and time on our application and do not want to risk having to re-start our application, however surely my husband should be able to leave to at least attend the funeral if he can't make it back to say his good-bye's? Does anyone know what we can do or if there is anywhere we can call to make arrangments for re-entry?

Any help would be appreciated as this is a bit time sensitive.

As he is British it is extremely likely that he will be allowed back in. He is from a very low risk country and can tell cbsa that he is well into an inland application. Perrhaps a note from the English dr just in case. Nothing is ever certain but you should be ok.

The reason for leaving is not relevant. It's just when returning, need to make sure CBSA allow you re-entry. CBSA will not care WHY you left Canada previously, they will only care about the reasons for entering Canada when they process you.

That being said, as mentioned for a UK national there is a 99.9% chance he will be allowed back into Canada no problem at all. I've known many visa-exempt people who have traveled in and out of Canada with an INLAND app in progress (most just due to wanting vacations), and none had any problems.
