Visitors required undergoing PR process?

Hello everyone, sorry if this isn't the proper area to submit in, but just as the title says. My visitors visa is expiring soon, and I am still processing for my Spouse PR application. My wife and I have been extending it as a precaution in case anything more is needed. But is having a visa required while I am being processed? Just trying to avoid unnecessary expenses.
