I applied for a visitor visa for myself and my spouse to accompany our son, who has already received his study permit to begin undergraduate studies at a Canadian university. We both applied for a multiple-entry visa valid until 2029, aligning with the expiry date of our son’s permit. In our application, we included evidence of sufficient financial support, both personal and from my brother, who is currently working in Canada. He also provided an invitation letter and additional funding documentation.

However, our visa applications were rejected shortly after we submitted our biometric information. The refusal letter listed the following reasons:
  • You do not have significant family ties outside Canada.
  • The purpose of your visit to Canada is not consistent with a temporary stay, given the details you have provided in your application.
In support of our application, I submitted:
  1. Property ownership documents (deeds),
  2. A letter from my employer confirming my job and stating that I am expected to return after my temporary visit,
  3. A completed family information form listing all family members (all brothers and sisters who live in my country - except for my younger brother, who is working in Canada and my mother, who is visiting Canada temporarily in a super visa).
I would appreciate any advice or suggestions from others who may have had a similar experience or insight into how to strengthen a future application. Thank you.

I applied for visitor visa in 2023 with my husband and daughter to visit my maternal aunt in Canada and ofcourse for sightseeing. But they refused our applications with the same reason as yours. But when I requested for the GCMS notes there were more specific reasons.

1. I had not provided proof for my relationship with my aunt except mentioning how she is related in my cover letter. This was one of the reasons. We need to prove our relationship with the person inviting us.
2. They were not convinced that we will come back to India because I was planning to travel with my entire family. I think that's unfair because we are going on a vacation and I would obviously want to spend the time with my entire family. Makes no sense to leave them behind.

Anyway, request the GCMS notes, through ATIP and address the specific issues and then re-apply or apply for a reconsideration.

There are likely multiple issues with the application including the desired length of the visa but the fact that your brother is providing funding is likely a big issue. You may need to prove that you are a genuine visitor if visiting for the first time before being able to get a longer visa. You should also be able to prove to can fund all your travels in addition to the study expenses. Your mother being in Canada also likely another concern. Adult siblings are not considered ties. Your son is also considered an adult so parents accompanying him to university is not guaranteed.

Sounds like a family reunion

And as mentioned, if the adult applied to go to school in another country , you can’t tag along with them . They are an adult . Time to cut the strings like they do in North America
Why send them overseas to go to school then think you can tag along ?

As well he has support from his relatives already here. It’s not like they’ll be completely alone
