Looking for any advice. Travelling last year we met a friend in Brazil who toured us around during our time there while on her vacation and I wanted to return the favour. I am a Canadian citizen, born and raised here. She is Brazilian. She has a return flight booked but visa was initially refused due to a poor application. Reasons given are travel history, purpose of visit, and personal assets / financial status.

She is now reapplying and we have added to the application a notarized letter of invitation from myself, a declaration of financial support, all my financials including proof of property and salary 75,000+, a detailed itinerary, her proof of schooling, a letter from her boss granting time off during their carnival holiday (Feb 19 to 27), and proof of her family ties (entire family lives in Brazil).

Her stay is only 5 days due to the short holiday break and she has saved 1,000 for spending, even though I have outlined I will cover all food, accommodations, etc. She has been to Chile, Argentina and Uruguay before but due to studying previously for 5 years has not travelled far and has limited funds and no property.

I feel we have made a strong case that she is a very low risk to overstay, and I’ve stated I will be bringing her to and from the airport. Is there anything else at all that can be provide to further prove she has no intention to stay beyond her requested 5 days? I feel we are hopeless with regards to her lack of travel and limited funds, but also feel we’ve laid out a clear plan that shows she has no intention or means to stay here.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

The visa officer will assume you will get married and she will try to stay.

What evidence of her ties to Brazil do you have that outweighs this?

Also, if she's Brazilian, doesn't she just need an ETA to fly to Canada?

I appreciate the reply. ETA is not an option since she’s never been to Canada or USA before. I am very new to this so my question is how do I go about proving beyond any doubt that she is simply a friend wanting to see Canada for 5 days?

Her ties to Brazil that we have provided include all her family being there (dad passed away, mother and brother info included with app), her job (included letter from employer approving vacation days with bank stamp of approval), her enrolment in school. She’s young at 26 and has a 5 year post secondary education so unfortunately has no property to show.

Is there anything else we can provide on my end or hers? The request is so short being 5 days I assumed that would rule out thoughts of a marriage by the visa officers. I also have a government job and am easy to track down so I’m hoping that helps.

Any other help would be greatly appreciated!!

Unfortunately, her case is quite weak. She has a previous refusal, insufficient finances, no family ties to her country, no property and no travel history to visa-requiring countries. Such a short trip is a red flag; people don't generally travel that far for only 5 days.

Your financials are irrelevant. IRCC wants to see that applicants have their own finances to fully finance the trip. Family ties are a spouse/children, not parents/siblings.

Totally understandable. I appreciate the reply.

Is there anything else that she can add to the application to show greater ties. How much should she realistically save for a trip? If we rebook the trip during her other vacation time in November what is an “ideal” length of time to not raise red flags?

Lastly, is there anything at all I can do to simply prove this is a genuine gesture of repaying a favour to a friend? I’d gladly leave my passport upon her arrival or a large deposit to ensure her return after 5 days.

It would be best if she can show savings of at least $10K. She should provide proof she has paid her tuition fee for the next semester of her schooling as well.

There is no provision for you to leave your passport or pay a deposit to guarantee she will leave. Whether she is approved or refused will be on the strength of the evidence she is able to provide (not you).

Honestly, beyond what scylla advised above, there really isn't much more she can do.

She should get GCMS notes for the previous refusal before reapplying.
