Hi all, I have a question about extending a TRV. CIC website states that "You must
send your application to extend your stay at least 30 days before your temporary
resident visa expires
", while in another file it says "If your current temporary
resident status is still valid you can apply for an extension of your stay providing you
apply at least 30 days before the expiry date of your current status". My
understanding is that the expiry date of your status can be way later then your visa
expiry date. So, which date should I follow? Thanks!

Actually if you can be sure it reaches CPC-V on the day your status expires, that would still work :) It should be before the current status expires. The expiration date of the visa is the last date by which one should use it otherwise s/he needs to apply for a new one.

The expiry date on your visa IS the date your status expires. I think the difference in wording is because they may be referencing visa exempt countries.

You can use your visa on or before its expiry date. It is up to the officer at port of entry how long a stay to grant you and if there was no other date stamped or written on your passport but the date when you arrived in Canada, then you can stay for 6 months counting the date of your arrival as day 1.

I guess I read this wrong. I was talking about visitor visa extensions. My bad!

You're right. If it were a visitor record (VR) given after a positive application for extension, then your status is valid up to the time indicated in the expiry date portion.
