Hey guys, my girlfriend is an American that wanted to come visit me for approximately 5 months. At the border, she essentially revealed that she was not financially stable (I'm going to pay for most of her trip but obviously border isn't going to simply believe that) so she only got a 1 month visitor record. So what is my best path of action now? I was told by some family members that I should just drive back to the states and come back(I'm from Montreal and the NY border is around 40 minutes away) and it'll renew her visitor record? I was thinking about applying for an extension online but her visitor record expires in 18 days and it takes approximately 34 days to process.
Thanks for the help.

Flagpoling (driving to the border and attempting to re-enter) carries a higher rate of refusal. Given she had some issues entering, it would be risky to do this and it's possible she could be refused entry.

If she wants to stay longer, she should apply for an extension to her visit from within Canada. As long as CIC recieves her extension application before her visit expires, she can remain in Canada until a decision in the extension is made.

What are some of the important things I should consider when applying for the extension? Are extensions often denied? I think the only reason they only gave her one month was because that they determined that her financial situation was not good enough to stay longer in Canada.

What are her reasons for wanting to stay in Canada longer?

Just so that we can be together for longer. Since shes an American and I'm Canadian, this is the only way we can be together for a period of time.

Also, if I'm going to be providing for her financially, is it okay if I put my bank statement in the extension application along with a letter of support?

Are you looking to live together for a full year continuously to become common law so that you can sponsor her for PR?

That is kind of the plan, but it's kind of a struggle for her to stay for even a few months right now let alone a year..

I'm currently asking for an extention but the the difficult part seems to be being able to demonstrate she can be financially stable. If I am helping her, in the extension application where I need to upload all the documents, should I put my bank statement for the last 6 months along with a letter of support basically saying that I'll be financing her?
