Hi Everyone,

Firstly, I'm sorry if this comes up often. I've tried looking but I haven't been able to find the information I need, so I'm hoping to get some answers. My wife, Canadian, and I, American, were married this year. We have been waiting for our Marriage certificate to submit for Spouse Sponsorship. With the holidays coming, we decided we could submit these things while I visited. This is where my questions are. I am planning to drive to her and be there from November to the end of February/beginning of March (I'll have finite dates when I cross the border). From what I've read, I can stay for up to six months.

So, firstly, what kind of questions should I be prepared for crossing the border? I will have specific dates of leaving and returning and I can get a written document from her stating she will support me while I'm with her. I will have my passport and ID.

Second, with my job, I am able to work remotely. From what I've read, I don't need a work visa for this, is this true? Is this something that will come up while crossing the border, and do I need anything from my work for this? I have read having a return to work note from my boss can help, so I'm open to that.

These are my main concerns. Is there any major concerns or things I need that I'm missing?

Thank you very much for your help!

You can only work remotely in Canada if the company does no work in Canada, has no Canadian clients and has no Canadian offices. You likely won't face a ton of questions as an American but most likely why are you visiting, who are you visiting and how long you are staying. You could also be asked to prove that you have the funds to support yourself and whether you have a job.

Have you entered Canada by driving before? I am Canadian so I may get a rather simple entrance procedure, but even entering the US on ground typically involves just a few questions:
  • Where are you going? (City, etc.)
  • Why? (I tend to answer simply: shopping, picking up a parcel, etc.)
  • How long will you be away? (A week, a few days, just until I get my mail, etc.)
And that's it. Entering from an airport is often a little more complex. But you're American, entering Canada should be really very simple for you. You just say that you're entering to visit family. That may provoke a question or two, admittedly, they may not be too concerned.
