Hi!
I'm visiting my girlfriend (she is 21, works, and is a Canadian citizen) in the next month for 6 weeks. And right now I'm getting pretty anxious. Should I worry about the border? How can I prove that I'm just visiting her and that I don't want to stay there?

We've met each other in September of last year, when I was studying at a college in Canada. I had got a scholarship, and spent 4 months there. We have been dating since December (5 months now), and I came back to Brazil in January. We talk and video call everyday, and I'm going to visit her in the middle of the year.

I'll be staying with her at her parents' house. I have a return ticket. I have an invitation letter from her parents and a letter from friends of mine saying I'll be visiting them as well. I still have 2 more semesters of college here in Brazil, so I can also show them that I'm enrolled in a college here.

1) Do you think I should worry about the border? What other ways could I prove I have ties here? (I don't have a formal job, I live with my family and my mom owns the house, and I'm 20 years old).

2) I'm thinking about taking $600 CAD, and a credit card. Do you think the border would think that's enough for 6 weeks?

3) I have a document saying which courses I still have to finish to graduate and another one saying that I'm enrolled in this semester. Would I have to have a letter from my College saying that I'm enrolled or do you think those documents would be enough?

Please! If you have had any experience with something similar, or if you could help me somehow, I would really appreciate it :D! We really miss each other and we can't wait to see each other again. We just want to spend my school break together and then I'm coming back to keep studying here. So if you have any advice or information that would make me less anxious, I would be really glad!

Thank you! :D

Hi there,

So... First thing is: have you applied for a Visitor Visa to enter Canada ?

Because that's the first filter, if you are approved, most likely you'll be fine when you arrive.

Answer this and we'll go from there.

Hi, Helena!

Thanks for your reply! I have applied for an eTA and it has been approved.

Hi

Your issue is proof of funds. $600 is nothing. Do you have bank statements showing more? A letter of support from your parents? Does the invitation letter from her parents state that they will be covering all of your costs?

That's great

So, all docs that you submitted with your application you should carry with you when you travel.

1. Don't worry much because you'll do the best you can to gather docs and proof of ties as best as you can. It is very imoortant though to show strong ties to your country. So, since the only strong tie you have is College, you should get letters- more than one- from them, along with other docs you already have. IF something happens, it's beyond your control. If you're determined to go, then it's worth to try.

2. CAD 600 is not enough for 6 weeks... you have to bring a bit more. Credit card is very useful, check jiw much credit limit it has. But try to bring 2000 cash at least, even though you'll probably not use it, borrow from your parents if possible, just to show that you can afford your stay.

3. Those docs are good, but you have to get the letter from yiur College's authorities stating ghat you are enrolled and are attending as a regular student. Also, if you are involved in ANY other activities at College, or a project with a particular professor, you should include letters as well. Anything that proves that you need to be back at the end of your trip. Think of these things to see if yiu can come upmwith something else.

The thing is, your situation is perfectly normal and understandable because you are pretty young, but that's also why you need more proof of ties than and old person, it is always easier for a young oerson to relocate.
So.. gather everything, as much as you can and get more money, it should be ok

I can get a letter of support from my parents! The invitation letter states that I'll have free accommodation. But her parents also told me that I wouldn't have to worry about buying groceries, because I could also eat their food. Should I include that on the invitation letter as well?

I won't have to pay for accommodation, I will have a health plan for the time I'll be there, I won't have to pay for transport (they have a car, and I still have my bus card from there), and I won't have to pay for food. I'll basically only use money if we go out for a restaurant, or a movie, or something like this. We don't intend to do anything that will be expensive when I'm there.

Thanks!

1)/3) Okay, I'll try to get those docs as well!

2) I'm not sure if I'll be able to get this whole amount of money in cash in just one month. I think I can take a bit more than CAD 1000. Would this amount of money sound good if I also get a letter of support from my parents, and if the invitation letter states I'll have free shelter and food?

Thanks!

Yes, you should get a letter from your parents, but more important from her parents explaining the plans, and stating that they are going to give you full accomodation, and support your whole stay with everything detailed. The more money you bring, the better. CAD 1000 is the least you should bring and the credit card with a statement showing the credit limit.
