Hi everyone,

I just have a question about a possible scenario in our spousal sponsorship(outland).

My spouse already has a visitor visa to Canada(valid until 2024) and we are halfway in the sponsorship process(waiting for further steps at NDVO).

Here is my question:
If my spouse gets PPR and get the Visa Stamping & COPR in India - Can he arrive in Canada using his Visitor's visa and not activate his PR upon arrival?

Due to uncertainty with this process, we want to plan my contingency options incase we are planning to go on a vacation in Summer.

Travelling back into Canada without PR Card(with an indian passport) after becoming a PR is not an option for us.

Thank you!

Well - he can - but it would probably be a better idea to activate it on his first arrival. What if, for example, one of you suddenly gets ill or there's a natural disaster and he can't travel until after the COPR expiration date?

Easiest solution is to travel and activate the COPR. If you then return to India he can get a Permanent Resident Travel Document to allow him to return to Canada when he's ready to actually move.

Yes, you can land and not activate your PR. I understand your reasoning as you will be in a bit of a limbo as regards air travel overseas until your PR Card arrives.

One possibility might be to land and activate your PR and arrange your travel plans such that you drive from Canada to the USA and fly to and from the USA. You can cross back into Canada by car without a PR Card as long as you can show your copy CoPR.

Thanks, we thought about that option. But we are in limbo about cruise ships along BC/Yukon/Alaska. Thanks again!
