My visitor Visa arrived today with the expiration date of March 10th 2019. I expected the end date to be in January 2028 which is the expiration date of my passport. For the date of my visit to Canada I had entered - March 8th to March 10th and a multiple entry visitor Visa was issued from Feb 28 to March 10.

In my previous experience for the tourist visa to Canada they had issued the visa for the entire duration of the passport so I had not expected this. None of the documentation or help on their website suggests that the multiple entry Visa would be for a duration lesser than 10 years or the validity of the passport. Has any process changed? Since I intend to make multiple visits to Canada should I put in the entire duration of 10 years in the next form that I submit? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!

While multi entry, multi year TRVs are generally the norm, it’s ircc that decides the type and duration of the TRV. Often short duration single entry visas are seen as a test to determine if you intend to honour the conditions of your TRV. When you apply again, you apply stating your intended travel. Stating 10 year travel duration would probably raise a few eyebrows and prove detrimental to your application. Remember, it’s CBSA who determine how long and how often you enter Canada, despite your plans.
