hi,

i am from the philippines. i just received my daughter's canadian citizenship certificate and getting ready to apply for her canadian passport. her father is a canadian citizen working in abu dhabi. i am planning to raise my baby in canada so i can give her a better future and so she can have better opportunities when she grow up. what should i do? can i apply for a permanent residency? how long is the process? or can i apply for a visit visa first? i have relatives in canada where we can stay and they promise to help me and my baby until we are settled.

thanks.

You do not qualify to apply for permanent residency based on your daughter's citizenship status. You can certainly try applying for a tourist visa / visit visa. But since you have a Canadian citizen daughter, CIC will probably think you're trying to come to Canada to stay long term and will refuse you. But again, you can try.

There are certainly a number of options available for you to apply for PR.

Your husband could sponsor you for permanent residency. This is probably the easiest route.

If you are no longer together with your husband's daughter, then you will have to apply for PR independently if you qualify. You can read about the various immigration programs available here and find out if you qualify to apply:

I assume, from the tone of the original post, that the father is no longer in a relationship with the OP. However, the OP will still need the father's formal permission for the child to be taken to Canada. There really isn't enough information in the post to know the true status of the relationship.

Your status as the mother of a citizen child does not make you eligible to apply for PR.

If you are married to a Canadian or PR or you have been in a common law partnership (living together as a couple) for the past 12 months or more, he would be able to sponsor you for PR as a spouse.

Otherwise, you may qualify to apply for your PR yourself under some immigration class. You'd have to look and find out at the CIC website at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/apply.asp

Thank you for your replies.

Im No longer with my baby's father. He left me for another girl after he got me pregnant.

In that case, you must qualify for immigration yourself if you want to move to Canada.

If you don't succeed, your daughter has the right to go to Canada when she is grown up and can take care of herself. She could study, apprentice or just work. Depending on the rules in place at that time, she may be able to sponsor you for permanent residency.
