So I planned to extend my time in Canada. However, I also have to travel to the USA for a week to deal with some stuff. I applied for the extension 60 days in advance of the expiry, and now 90 days later I have heard nothing back.

Is there anything I can do to find out whats going on? I filled in the online form but have heard nothing back.

There is no point in extending visitor status when you plan to leave Canada anyways. When you leave the country, your visitor status ends. You will be evaluated as a new visitor when you re-enter.

Really? That's weird because when I asked at the embassy I was told that I would need the tourist visa renewed as I was only leaving for a couple of days....

You may want to re-consider this trip as re-entry is not guaranteed especially if you are using the extension to get you to the number of days required for a PR application e,g common law or have an inland PR application going. If bounced at the border then you are back to the starting point.
