Visa application and passport renewal at the same time.

Hello everyone, my situation is a little bit complicated so I'll try to provide as much details as possible.

I'll be starting my study program this fall in the 4th of September in Quebec. So after getting a CAQ I found out that my passport expires in January 2019 and has minor damages in the cover from the inside. Therefore, I requested to a new passport which is expected to be ready before the 6th of August.

Knowing that the old passport will stay with me, I have two options:

1. Wait for the new passport then apply for a study permit.
2. Apply for the permit with my old one.

The first option has two problems:
-I'm not sure if I can get the permit in time before the start of my program.
-The CAQ I got was using the old passport.

While the second option also has two problems:
-As I said, my passport expires in January, so I'm afraid I get a rejection because of this.
-If I got the permit, I'm afraid they won't let me pass through in the airport because of the damages in the passport. But at that time I will have my new one with me also so maybe it is possible to present both passport when entering.

You need 6 month valid passport to apply so technically you have time, also usually they will take your old passport and cut it when they issue you a new one so check if this is a requirement.
CAG/permit being in old passport is not really a problem, just carry both.
See if your country has an express option for passport renewal.
