Hi,
I have been a PR for over 10 years and have been renewing my PR status since I got it. I sent in my application for it to be renewed May of 2016; I met all the residency requirements and had sent in all the required documents. I then received a notice in August of 2016 saying that it is under a secondary review. I was very surprised given that I had no issues in the past to renew it and I have grown up here in Canada since a young age. I figured that I should submit my application for Verification of Status document in case this renewal process takes much longer than expected.
I'm currently in the process of applying to grad schools and it's required for me to provide valid proof of my PR status. I called the CIC recently and the agent informed me that my Verification of Status has gone through and it will arrive soon. For the Ontario grad schools I'm applying to, the guidelines state that I can provide Verification of Status OR a valid PR card as my proof. However, it seems that I may run into problems with grad schools in a different province (based on email correspondence when I explained my situation). I know that CIBC accepts Verification of Status as a valid primary identification (just like they do for the PR card) to get a valid driver's license/SIN card issued. From this, I gathered that Verification of Status is a valid method of proving my PR status in Canada.
I am also thinking of sending an urgent request for PR renewal as I have just read a post about someone who had a PR renewal application that was under a secondary review but requested for urgent processing and it went through.
I wanted to confirm that Verification of Status can be used as valid proof of PR status while waiting for my renewed PR card. I understand that my expired PR card is no longer "valid" but this does not mean that I lose my rights as a Canadian permanent resident. If anyone has experienced a similar situation as described, I would really appreciate it if you could share any suggestions or advice.
I've been very distraught since last August about this PR renewal issues -- I would truly appreciate any helpful advice. Thank you so much in advance.
