Validity of Visitor visa ?????

Hi, guys !!! I heard even if you inform CIC that I want to stay there in Canada for like 1 month, they stamp visitor visa valid for 6 month, Is this so ????? Validity of visitor visa depends on CBSA officers at port of entry or CIC office where you apply from ??? Actually, I am applying for visitor visa for my spouse and my consultant told me that even if you show 1 month, you will get visa valid for 6 month !!!! Is he right ?

Usually this is a practice by uk and USA , hopefully Canada also issues in the same way...
