I think he is talking about Identity Card, which is not in English.

National Identity Card may not be necessary but you can get it translated from the Secretariat very easily .

After you leave your country, no N.I.C or other sort of cards will be that helpful except passport (and international drivers license). Normally what happens is, they will use your passport or student ID as your identification, neither any of other cards.
