Hello forum,

I come to you with a particular matter in search for advice.

I'll be landing in Canada in order to complete my permanent residency process next week, hence my family has thrown me a farewell party in which my girlfriend made some Canada related decorations using the Maple Leaf and Flag. She made some masks using the leaf in order to take pictures with the family and a banner using the leaves saying "Happy New Beginning". The flags were small printed in paper and glued to a small stick placed around the table, nothing disrespectful.

I showed some of the pictures we took to a friend who's welcoming me into his house the first few weeks and he said not to post any of the pictures in social media because it could not be appropriate or wise to do so. I'm really thorned apart because my girlfriend worked really hard on all these decors and I would like to show it to the rest of my friends and family.

What do you guys think about this? Do Canadians really have such a high standard for the use of their symbols? I can vouch for all the pictures and say they are really innocent and just of my family wearing the masks and smiling to wish me luck in my new life.

Your friend is an idiot. Ignore him.

I agree with scylla. Lot of my friends are idiots too.

No, no real Canadian thinks like your friend does. There is no problem at all to do what you're suggesting, and post the pictures all you want. Trust me, nobody will care and any Canadian that sees it will think it's cute and patriotic.

As mentioned above, anyone how would take offense to something like this is an idiot.

Agree with everyone else. Ignore your friend about this.
