Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum and also just about to start with my application under spousal sponsorship. I am going to apply for police clearances next week but I still do not have much information on how to apply for FBI clearance. I did visit their website. I shall really appreciate it if members here could help with the questions below.
Do we need a cover letter? If yes where can we get it from?
Address of finger printing services in New York? (Authorized and reliable)
After having the finger prints done where do we send the application? I am in New York so is there any offices nearby? The processing time on their website says 16 to 18 weeks but somewhere in this forum I read it as 4 weeks ( please enlighten me on this)
Is it necessary to send police clearances with the application or can we do it later?

For your information my visa office will be New Delhi, India.

Many thanks in advance

1. Did you read the CIC instructions? I suggest you do. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/security/police-cert/north-america/united-states.asp
2. You should submit a complete application with all attachments, unless you wish to take the chance that is returned as incomplete.

When we did ours for USA FBI, it took about 4-5 weeks.

All NY Locations

http://www.myfbireport.com/locations/lawEnforcement/NY.php

Just go there, take your fingerprints - after 2 weeks or so, call and see if they can expedite - 1 (304) 625-5590

Request 2 copies of FBI report, ND can be notorious in losing things

The instructions mention a cover letter, but it is not needed. I typed up something simple, just basically telling them I needed the police certificate for my permanent residency application within Canada, and providing my phone number and email address, should they need to reach me. Probably completely unnecessary, but I over think things.

You can print the fingerprint cards and the applicant identification form off from the FBI site. All the info you need about what to send and where can be found here: http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/criminal-history-summary-checks/submitting-a-criminal-history-summary-request-to-the-fbi

It took around 6 weeks to get our police certificate back.

Thank you so much for writing back. Dd you get your finger prints done at the police? Does law enforcement agency only include police here? I am a visitor here so don't know much. Thank you

I can't tell you about getting prints in the U.S. My husband is Canadian military, so he took me to the base up here and the military police guy was able to do mine.

Hi all,
I'm submitting my application as soon as I can after my wedding in October. My question is, can I do them prior to my wedding? Since I'm taking his name, and did so just prior, there won't be a record of it anywhere. Or do I have them search my maiden name? I'm a little confused. I'd like to do them end of September/ beginning of october so I can have it out in mid- november if I have my new identification. At the least, I'd like to do them at the beginning of october. Is that possible?
Thanks in advance.

Where in New York State are you? If you are in NYC you should get them done at One Police Plaza (4/5/6 to Brooklyn Bridge—City Hall, 2/3 to Park Place, N/R to City Hall, J to Chambers Street).

Thanks and yes I am in New York.

You're right. That's the expected wait time. I wish CIC would update their website to reflect that.
