If you submit them within 3 months if issuing, they will last 1 year. If you don't submit them within 3 months, they will expire and you need to have them redone. If there's no movement in your file for 1 year, the embassy can ask you to get another check.

If I remember correctly, you mentioned you didn't send a prepaid FedEx return envelope with your initial application. If so, this could be the reason why mine got to me sooner. Regular mail takes longer than the 5 days it took FedEx.
The FedEx priority envelope that was sent to me looked like this:
