Did a search and didn't see anything on here - has anyone who has exported and then imported their car from the US to Canada recently used the AESDirect site themselves to create a "shipment"? How did it go?

I am thinking of doing it myself as it doesn't seem too difficult...

I've seen companies that will upload to AES Direct for anywhere from $45 - $65USD. I took one look at the AES Direct manual and said "NO WAY." And I don't recall if I've seen anyone on the forum learn/do it on their own.

I can see why someone might want to tackle it though.

For about 30 minutes, I thought "If I learn this, I can make a business of it helping people on the forum!!!" but I think people who upload (exporters) have to be U.S.-based.

BEST $60USD I spent during the export/import process. PM/Email me if you need more info.

If you are a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Resident or have a U.S. Company, then you can file for AES yourself.
Non U.S. Residents or Foreign Companies must
1.Select and authorize a U.S. agent (i.e. Freight Forwarder, Broker, etc.) to file export information to the AES on your behalf
2.Provide the U.S. agent with your foreign passport number (instead of an EIN) alongwith other required data elements
3.Obtain the ITN from the authorized agent

@JayPinNC: Which Freight Forwarder did you use for your AES?

Ok... so it seems like no one on here has actually used it (AESDirect). I guess when I do it I will share my experience. I'm a U.S. citizen. It was easy to get an EIN and set up the AES account.

The manual didn't seem too bad to me but I am used to stuff like that!

I am going back and forth. Depending on how much time I have, I might do AESdirect myself. If I chicken out, I'll pay $35 to have these guys do it for me.

When I tried using AESDIRECT i was told only US or Canadian citizens can use that, rest need to go through the third parties listed on the website.

Hi monstergirly,

I see that you have landed. Did you file at AES Direct on your own? I am in the same stage, next is the certification quiz and then adding the shipment. Was it too tough or doable?

thx

Well... I ended up biting the bullet and spent $35 to have someone do it for me - I didn't want to risk screwing it up and raise any red flags with the CBP (which I already did - I'll post separately).

I used the vendor that Amalthea mentioned below - it was easy and they had quick turnaround:

Just a separate inquiry,

For Ontario, do you pay the provincial portion of HST while importing car when you land?

Bringing a car over for settlers effects, is there any requirements other than the importation checklist? Can I bring any car over?

Look at the RIV site for conditions on cars being brought to Canada. You can't just bring any car into the country. Well, you can bring most cars, but getting them on the road is a separate issue. The RIV site is a good place to start for specific vehicle questions.
