Hi everyone.

We just went and got the fingerprints done. However, he had to send a copy of his fingerprints to his State police department. They do not accept credit card. How do we pay? How can he get a certified check or money order in Canada if his bank is in the States? Does anyone know this?

Please and thank you!

Why would you need to send fingerprints to his State police department? He should be sending them directly to the FBI.

The fingerprint agency gave us 2 sets of prints - 1 for the FBI and 1 for his State Police. How do we send a certified check or money order to them tho? If they don't accept VISA?

You don't need to do a State police check, only the FBI. Very rarely (and usually very late in the application process) CIC will ask for a State fingerprint check, if they think there may be charges there that haven't shown up on the FBI check. You almost never hear of this being needed and even if they do, any check you have done now will most likely be expired by the time they ask. Save your money - send CIC only what is asked for...the FBI check.

Edit: There was a time in the past when CIC asked for State checks as well as FBI...the agency that did the fingerprints is probably not aware that this requirement has changed.

Thank you for your reply. I understand and I believe you that we don't really need it now. However, if the people at the fingerprints agency insisted we should send it (they did not say it's optional), I want to send it. Maybe I am a bit paranoid, and I am sorry. It's not because I don't trust you, it's just how I am :|. I was looking online on how to send it and canada post has an option w w w.canadapost.ca/cpo/mc/personal/productsservices/shop/moneyorders/default.jsf . I hope that will work...

Once again, thank you so much.

I did not send a State Police check and it wasn't asked for. If it's going to take you a long time to receive it (longer than it will take you to receive the FBI request) then I don't suggest it at all. I think that the people who finger printed your husband were confused.

Also, I hope you got more than 2 copies? Something prints are ineligible, which is why I sent in four copies to the FBI.

I'm in the same situation that you want to put your husband in, and it's been tough. So just be sure he understands how hard the wait can be when you don't have much to occupy yourself with. I've been in Canada on a visitor's visa since July (I extended my visa in December), and not working or going to school has drove me insane. However, I would rather be here with my husband than not. I miss my family though, and cannot wait to go visit them once I have COPR. You will more than likely have to extend his visa if you want him to legally stay with you longer than 6 months. But remember, a visa extension doesn't give him a right to re-entry so if he lives Canada he risks not being able to enter again.
TRUE STORY! I'm in the same boat, going on 1 year + 5 months on a Visitor Visa (Extended). No work, no school, difficult to make new friends without any "outlets". I've been literally bored. to. tears. It's hard. Real hard. But very worth it. Good luck!!!

Good morning all.

We took only 2 sets of fingerprints. I did print out a bunch of fingerprint cards from the FBI website, but they said they had their own and they are professionals so I won't need more than 1. I ended up paying 60$ for the fingerprints, so I am assuming if I were to ask for more it would have cost me even more. Now, I understand it is not necessary, but the cards with the fingerprints are a bit different, so I can't send both of them to FBI and none to Alabama. I wanna listen to your advice, but I am scared I will mess things up if I don't send 1 to FBI and 1 to Alabama... I don't know what to do... :(

Here is the information directly from CIC website for applicants from USA http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/security/police-cert/north-america/united-states.asp
It clearly states at the top that you only need a State certificate if the request it - "The Visa Office will advise you if state certificates are required in your case."

Thank you. I see it.

I will send just the 1 set of fingerprints we have to FBI. Regular mail, or UPS/FedEx so I can track it?

I had my fingerprints taken at the police station here in BC and sent just one set to FBI, no problem. I had my Social Security Card lost in the mail in the US, I don't trust regular mail system for something that important. It cost more but I always use something I can track and assure the delivery.

I second that. I was stupid enough to send mine through regular mail, and it was nerve wrecking not knowing for three months whether it was delivered or whether some crook now had access to my SSN and personal information. It turned out that the fingerprints card made it just fine, but the first certificate they sent me got lost. I had to ask them for a second one. So yes, get a tracking number.

I ended up finding a place to Volunteer --- have you thought of that?
