I am currently a US (on L1-B visa) based international student in University of Calgary studying a 24 months program. I came into Calgary 2 days ago. I plan to truck my car with the rest of my property to Calgary. The car has US license plates and I have a valid US license that is expiring at the end of this month. I did not bother to renew my license since I would be moving down here to Calgary anyways.
So, my questions are:
1. Do I need to import my car? I have heard that they will allow you to keep your car in Canada without having to import it as long as you are an international student. However, I am bit concerned since I am not a US citizen.
2. Can I just go ahead and get a Canadian license since my US license is expiring in a few weeks? Technically, if I get to keep my car's US license plates, wouldn't it be illegal to drive it with a Canadian driver's license.
3. My car is not yet paid in full, still in lieu and therefore does not have a clean title; must I pay it in full and get a clean title before I bring it in to Canada? Or can I just truck in my car, use it and continue payment as usual?
4. What are the custom fees that I am required to pay?
