Hi All,

I am a permanent resident of Canada (got PR last year in October, 2016) and my mother holds a tourist visa (valid for 10 years). She comes to visit me almost every year and usually the immigration officer doesn't stamp a date but this time he did stamp 90 days. Now i want to apply for her extension (as i want her to stay longer than 6 months this time) but have a doubt about it: i found on CIC website that if the applicant is already in Canada he/she can still apply for Supervisa (i think the application is same as for Extension of stay, not sure still need to check this)??.
Another doubt is: in case she do get the extension, how long would she get it for? (2 years?? or less) and would she be able to go back home within this 2 year period and again come back ( i know this isn't possible as border officer stamps everytime you enter canada and might stamp again for just say 90 days, so my understanding is if she gets extension of say 2 years she better would have to stay for entire 2 year time and not go back within that duration).

sorry guys, i sound confusing and i am at this point but if someone can please answer the concerns i will really thankful.
thanks so much

Hi

She needs to apply to extend her stay as a visitor. How long she is granted is completely up to the officer reviewing the application.

A visitor extension application is entirely different from a Supervisa application. A Supervisa is an entry visa. It does not grant status in Canada.

Visitor status ends when a person leaves. She would be re-assessed as a new visitor if she returns to Canada.

Thanks so much for a prompt response. So that means if i want her to stay longer (2 years) its better to go back home and apply for a supervisa from there. because extension could be granted for 2 years or 3 months, it all depends on the officer. correct?
