There are doctors on WPs so the argument isn’t true. There are some jobs that do require PR or citizenship. Not being able to afford to Disneyland, like many Canadians, is not a reason why Canada should change their immigration targets. With an RTD you can apply for a US visa so there will be protected people who are able to go to Disneyworld or Disneyland. You have a guaranteed pathway to PR unlike most temporary

Reading all your responses on this thread, you've made very valid arguments that I agree with. The most important point was about family reunions. If the government can create a temporary pathway for family reunification, the majority won't mind the delay in PR.

In my opinion, family reunions are the most common and most emotionally draining aspect of waiting for PR. Any other reason is insignificant. With my RTD, I can literally travel to most countries without any hassles.

Most of us currently work in the health, IT, and other sectors and have excellent careers, so we can cater to our families. If the government can create a pathway for family reunification, it'll make a huge difference.

It also won't cost the government anything to allow protected persons to apply for all jobs, just like PR holders. I honestly believe all these individual changes are possible if we come together as a body and present this to the relevant government agency.

We Are All Shocked: PR Processing Times for Refugees and Protected Persons Have Reached 99 Months!

We need your attention — something deeply unfair is happening in Canada right now, and it affects thousands of vulnerable individuals and families.

Recently, IRCC updated the estimated processing time for permanent residence (PR) applications submitted by refugees and protected persons — and to our shock, it now shows up to 99 months. That’s over 8 years of waiting just to become a permanent resident.

But the pain doesn’t stop there.
➡️ Only 1 year of time spent in Canada before PR is counted towards citizenship eligibility.
➡️ You still need 2 more full years (to meet the 1095 days requirement) after receiving PR.
➡️ And even after applying for citizenship, the current processing time is 13 months.

That means, in total, it could take over 12 years for refugees and protected persons to become Canadian citizens — even after being accepted for protection.

This is not just a delay.
This is a denial of dignity, of stability, of hope.

⏳ What does this really mean?

  • Over a decade of living in limbo.
  • Endless stress, uncertainty, and fear of separation.
  • Inability to fully settle, reunite with family, or travel freely.
  • Continued mental and emotional exhaustion.
We are all shocked and deeply hurt by this situation — and we believe it is unjust, inhumane, and unacceptable.

That’s why we are coming together.
We call on everyone affected, and every Canadian who cares, to help us raise awareness and demand change.

We have created a FB page where
Search on FB our group : "justice for protected persons in Canada”

It still puts stress on resources/infrastructure but as I have suggested many times being realistic with what people are asking from the government and showing how it would benefit Canada while limiting costs is the best way to change policy especially given the current economic and political situation in Canada. There are certainly some protected people who are financially self-sufficient and would be able to support other family members but that is not the case for all protected people. Even if family reunification can happen earlier but not right away that is still better than nothing. A small pilot program could even be proposed initially to measure outcomes of earlier family reunification. Demanding faster processing is not likely to get a great response by the general population or politicians. The group needs to think a lot more strategically.

It is a human right to see our family and build it up, it is not about politics or economy. This is injustice. We have been waiting for PR just to get our families, because we don't have the freedom of moving between the counties to meet up with our families. Most of the visas need PR earthier you get accepted or your spouse get refused for the visa! This cause a huge pain. We are human, 8 years of waiting! I dont mind the delay just let me get my wife in here, isnt of my right?? there is many concerns think deep about it...

I will be the contrarion but the main goal of asylum/protected people and refugee is safety not fast processing to get citizenship. The fundamental issue is where do you find the extra PR quota? You can call for the freeze of private and government sponsored refugees (which have their own backlogs) or the freeze of parent sponsorship (also have a backlog) until the backlogs are cleared but otherwise there is no extra capacity in the PR targets to easily be cut. The weighting and priority will always favour economic immigration and family sponsorship (spouse & dependent children) of PRs and citizens.
Many people are not going to like this comment, but asylum seeker's first priority should be protection not the PR. If Canada is giving protection and a protected person can travel on a refugee travel document (RTD) except the country of their persecution then what is the problem here even more than 99 months?
