Just curious if one can cross the unguarded US-Canada border, enter USA and return back to Canada within minutes? And if caught what would be the consequences?

Worst case scenario you could be detained and deported.

You must cross at legal border crossings, the only reason refugees can do that is because they are claiming refugee and under Canadian and International agreements they are allowed to do so, and it is not considered a crime.

For the rest of us with no valid reason to do so. It is trespassing on foreign soil and not reentering from the proper channel, and you will be arrested by either USA or Canada and deported.
