maybe depends if any criminal proceedings being initiated to recover the debt Debts always have a habit of catching up with people even if changing country there are always companies whose sole purpose in life is to track down defaulters and 30k in 2011 may be a lot more now with interest etc..

I don't think it will be a problem. The only reason that it would be of a concern is when it gets reflected into the PCC, but for that to get there, should equate to a certain offence, of which I don't believe so when it comes to debt esp. if its unsecured debt. It could be a different story though, if it has to do with unpaid taxes or any other related government debts, try to read about Australian policy about unpaid debts.
Ultimately nobody on here can really say if having a debt in Australia will cause issues. Obviously if any legal proceedings have been initiated that might show on a police report but 30 k might just buy a new car so not as though is a multi million dollar share dealing debt so unlikely to show up.
Looking ahead though debts always have a habit of coming back to bite people at some point in the future just something to keep in mind especially if a government debt not so much I guess a company debt. Plus who knows what credit rating agencies or card companies such as Visa share on international basis
Just a for info and not really relevant to Canada yet but shows that debts have a habit of not going away. In this case through shared info between Australia and NZ for a NZ student loan so countries do sometimes share information. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11649649
