Hey everyone, just wondering if anyone has done anything like this.

My sister, her boyfriend and I will be going to the U.S. To help my husband move the rest of his things this weekend. We have to bring the uhaul since it needs to be returned where it's picked up... My sisters boyfriend will be driving it, following us in a car. (Just getting there) my husband will drive it back with me.

Would the border give my sisters boyfriend any trouble entering the U.S. with an empty uhaul?

I took an empty U Haul to the states back in January. I had no problem with crossing the border.

I can't imagine that it'd be an issue. You're not bringing a bunch of stuff INTO the states, for one. Also, make sure to have your husbands COPR/permits/etc on hand so that you can prove that he is legally moving and that this is why he's using the Uhaul.

I'm a bit confused as to why you aren't just getting a one way Uhaul though? I moved from Seattle to Victoria and rented a Uhaul one way.

They're too expensive :( he doesn't have enough to Fill the smallest size they allow to bring one way. Or else we would do it that way for sure.

Have you tried calling around to a few different Uhaul places? I was able to take the smallest Uhaul (10' I think?) across with no problems....I wonder why they are telling him he must take a bigger one? I've found that you can get wildly different results if you talk with different Uhaul retailers - especially if it isn't an actual Uhaul facility.

Has he looked into doing a moving pod maybe? Or renting a truck one way? Trying to rack my brain for ways to make it cheaper, haha...moves can be really rough! Hopefully he doesn't have too long of a trip to make!

Luckily it's only a 5 hour drive so it isn't horrible! Thank you for all of your advice!

I would think the mileage on the "in town" rental is going to kill you. Isn't it something like 0.90 cents a mile?

Whenever I've crossed...it seems it's the US side that's more concerned about what you are bringing into their country (and potentially selling). When I was working as a rescue training consultant, I had a bunch of equipment. They made me itemize everything, estimate the value for each piece, then issued an order saying that I had to cross back through at that point on a certain day or else they would send a bounty hunter after me. I thought that was only in the movies! LOL

Can't see anyone concerned about an empty U-haul. As per usual, just be honest and tell them your story.

It comes out to about 360.00 before gas including mileage there and back which isn't that bad. Considering the cheapest for one way is 530.00 before gas. They dropped the mileage down to 20 cents and 180 free a day.

WOW, seriously $530? How far are you going? I have a 26' Uhaul booked to pick up next week. Our trip is from New Jersey to British Columbia, with 3400 miles (the trip is 3100) it's costing us only $1526 with taxes.

The cost for a one-way Uhaul is pretty large no matter how far you're going, saria1. I looked into it here in Ontario for a 2-3hr trip and it was nearly $500.

I thought the cost for me was rather affordable. Have you looked into any of the u pack pods? They start at $4500, from NJ to BC, and thats just for one. I was shocked she isn't going that far and it's costing her over $300.

Looking into other options, thinking outside of the box, like... maybe renting a cargo van from Enterprise would be a much cheaper option than a 10' from Uhaul.

Yeah it's a shorter distance, it's unfortunate because he really doesn't have much stuff. The only big thing is a mattress which is why he needs a cargo van sized vehicle.

He was going to rent a uhaul trailer but last minute we realized it's almost impossible for him to register his leased truck here in Ontario. Export/import would be no problem. But the registering with service Ontario is. So now we have 4 days to find a way! Haha

You lost me.... Did you deviate from the truck rental issue and switch the subject to a leased vehicle issue?

Since I'm on my way to bed, I'm going to respond as if I'm talking to you about a lease vehicle issue. No, you can't export and import a leased vehicle out of the US into Canada. If you are the one in a million who's lease company authorized it, you should run into no further issues. My experience, I had a leased Honda Crosstour, I turned it in 3 months early when I learned they would not allow me to export it out of the USA. After much reading, I went and bought a new car, thinking I would be one of the majority that would be able to export a financed car. Nope, not my case. So I had to go and pay off all our cars and get the titles in hand, this way nothing stood in the way of exporting the vehicles out of the country.

After all that... You said the export/import would be no problem, but registering it is an issue. How is that possible? If CBSA allows a vehicle to be imported, all should be good.
