I have got an acceptance email from this VP-and- Prof of Biomedical engineering department stating- he doesn't have enough fund to support any new student and if I do not need the financial support from him, he may accept me. I am confused if I have to end up paying more than expected. Anybody here knows how much amount of funds(approximate) would it take if we are to bear the research works for a Masters program at U of S.

Any help towards this query is really appreciated!

Btw... below is the gist of my profile:

10th- 92%
12th-92%
B.Tech- 91% (Gold Medalist)
IELTS-7.5

Hi,

An impressive academic record!!!

with marks like these.. why only limit yourself to U of S ?? There are so many good public universities. You can try applying to any of them.

Most Canadian universities need B grade or minimum 60% in final 2 years of B.tech degree for students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria etc. and an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (with no bands less than 6)(some may require IELTS score of overall 7) for applying to engineering Master degrees.

You can pursue a course based 1-1.5 years length M. Eng master degree OR research oriented, thesis based 2 years long MaSc./Msc. degree. The research based degrees are usually more competitive, where one generally needs to show some knack for research (like published papers) and selected students usually get partial or full funding.

You should definitely consider applying to the top level universities. There are so many other universities offering studies in Bio-medical engineering such as U of Toronto, UBC, U of Alberta, U of Western Ontario, Mcgill, Mc-Master, U of Ottawa, U of Calgary, U of Manitoba etc.

Here's the list of ALL recognized Canadian educational institutes eligible for OCWP+PGWP, listed according to province:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/institutions/participants.asp

You can see general rankings of Canadian universities to get an overall idea.. as to which universities are reputed.
For example: http://www.university-list.net/canada/rank/univ-7007.htm
www.4icu.org/ca/

You need to go through all the university websites to know more about course content, graduate degree options, deadlines, tuition fees, admission procedure etc.

The application submission date for Fall 2013 (Sept) start in most universities is already long over, and you should consider applying for 2014 Fall intake.

In the top ranked universities, you will have assured funding for pursuing research based degrees.

Best of Luck.

Yes, Thanks Tiger007… I have some reasons to be sticking with U of S. Personally I am looking for univ’s excluding those in Ontario and BC. Also my stream of interest is Biomedical Technology. I did think of applying to U of M, but then the deadline was so near that I couldn’t apply. Yes, I have applied to U of C; its again very highly competitive that they only take 21 students in total for that Biomedical Technology program ( with a Master’s in Business Management). I have to keep my fingers crossed for that 
With U of A, I really got annoyed as none of the professors were in a position to take any students for Fall 2013. I even wondered if any of them are doing their Masters at all this Fall!. I chose not to follow up with them either as it was a real pain just to get a denial email from the professors saying they can’t take students this year. Most of them did not even care to respond.
So I had to limit my choices to U of S & U of C.. Just in case U of C didn’t work out I wanted to go to U of S. Now, I am worried if I can go ever go to either of those. One other advantage of U of S is that they don’t really have any deadlines for the Application. Plus, the most striking thing for me is the research area of focus of the faculties in it. As it was in line with my passion, I so really wanted to go for it. I was hopeful as I was contacting this supervisor for almost 2 months and it seemed to be a good sign. And now not of course!
I did see through all of the requisites and course contents including those of their faculties’ research areas and found these 2 more appealing.
I only wanted to go as early as possible, by this Fall. Although the next intake is only a few months away, I want to make it for this year  I don’t think I can go to any universities now due to lack of funds with most projects. At least this supervisor was kind enough to offer me a position but without funds.
I wonder how a graduate student cannot be funded at all for a research based course. Suppose if I join in accepting to bear all the costs, will I later be given funds during the course of the degree if the funds become available? Or there is no such possibility??

Is there any unviersity that still accepts applications for graduate positions preferrably for Biomedical Engineering [ I know its too much to ask for as most of them don't hav ethis coourse :(! ]

Hi,

Most of the times, it's unheard of research students pursuing without grant in Canadian universities. But again, may be due to budget cuts or maybe it's such a niche field- Biol-medical technology... so funding for this department may be very limited as compared to mainstream branches such as Mech.,Civil, Electrical, Electronics and CS...
And later if funds do become available, it's entirely at the department and your supervisor's discretion... whether to fund you or not. So, you need to clarify this point with that professor at U of S.
personally, I feel... there's no point in studying Research degree with your own money. Rather you may pursue 1-1.5 year m.Eng. course based degree and later move to PhD(full funding) OR pursue Master's research degree in some other related branch.
Also, If you fail to find funding in Canada or do not want to pursue M.eng. and/or research in other fields... then despite all their problems... United states is still the best place on earth to pursue high quality and cutting edge research in the filed of sciences and engineering. And you may consider preparing for GRE(score very high) and coupled with your excellent academic record, try applying to top level universities including the ivy leagues. It's worth it.

Best of Luck.
