If my friend comes to visit (assuming his TRV is granted) - could he be allowed to volunteer for a charitable organization over christmas?
Or would this be considered as "working"?

It would be great to know whether it's illegal. No need to jeopardize his status.

If no others doing the same job are paid, then yes it is allowed.
