TRV is due to expire

Hello, My father's trv is going to expire in June 2018 cause of his passport expiry date. He got trv for 2 years instead of 5. He recently got his passport renewed. He is going going to visit me in July. What is the process for extending his trv? or he has to apply for fresh trv. And does he have to wait until his trv expires?
