This is a UK immigration question. Go on the UK govt site but if leaving airport you need eTA. Just got one and it took 10 minutes.

Hi
I am a Canadian citizen and would be coming back from India in February and taking Air India from New Delhi to London. I would then take Air Canada from London till Toronto. Do I need to take ETA. I checked UKVI ( UK visa & immigration), it mentions following
  • Airside Transit Exemption: If you are staying within the same terminal (or moving between terminals via the airside shuttle) and your baggage is checked through to your final destination, you do not need an ETA.
  • Border Control Rule: You only need an ETA if you must pass through UK passport control. This typically happens if you:
    • Need to collect and re-check bags on a self-transfer (separate tickets).
    • Intend to leave the airport to visit London during a long layover.
    • Need to stay overnight in a hotel located outside the terminal's secure area
  • What does it airside shuttle means.
Though Air India and Air Canada use same terminal (#2) , I think I would not require to switch terminal , but in case terminal is changed and they take me via shuttle bus would it mean that That i Have exited the airport. Thanks

Generally speaking most big airports will arrange so that you stay in the 'international zone' if you're switching flights on a ticket/group of tickets booked together. EVen between terminals.

Airside shuttle means you stay in the international zone.

That said: it can be convenient to have the ETA in hand just in case. And if you're concerned and using a Canadian passport, why not just pay the 16 quid and not worry?
