I have seen so much conflicting information about this, I'm seeking to understand how it actually works!

I'm an American citizen and I've been staying with my Canadian husband as a visitor since November 2016. However, I haven't been in Canada the whole time. Every month, I go back to the states and spend a day or two doing errands (getting my mail, getting my prescriptions, etc) then I return to Canada, stay another month, repeat.

Given that I'm American, I have no visitor visa or visitor record or anything like that. I understand that I need to apply to extend my visitor status if I'm going to be here more than six months. But when did I technically enter Canada, if I've been leaving and re-entering every month? Since I started doing this in November, would it be May that my six months is up? Or does it actually re-set every time I re-enter, so I would have six months from the last time I entered (which was last week)?

Based in what I'm reading, it seems like getting a visitor extension wouldn't necessarily even do me any good if it is only valid until you leave Canada, and I will still need to go back to the US on a monthly basis... after my six months are up, if I get an extension, does that mean I can no longer cross the border until I get my PR?

Traveling back and forth so frequently runs the risk of cbsa thinking you are not visiting Canada, you are visiting the USA. Be careful what you say at the border.
