Hey guys, I was just wondering if it's possible to travel with PR card and no passport? I had to send my passport for my travel document application and wondering if I can come back to Canada with my PR card if it arrives before my travel document? thanks

Agreed. Airline won't let you board without a valid passport. The PR card does not take the place of a passport.

Wait. It depends - in some countries, there are bi-lateral agreements which allow to travel with id-cards (i.e. European union), you can travel from once EU country to another only using biometric residence card.

I am not sure if this applied to US-Canada or some other-Canada...

usually, PR card is not an ID outside of Canada.

Not really relevant to if the op can get back to Canada though.
No airline will let you board a flight without a passport. Even in the EU. Even in the EU between countries that have a specific agreement that a passport isn't required to travel. If you go by plane you always need a passport.

Not true. In the EU you can travel by plain or any other transport with your ID card, if you are from one of the EU countrys of course, passport not required.
But this is the only exception as long as I know.
You definitely need your passport if you travel from/to Canada.

There are some countries allow to travel without passport. For example, If you want to travel from Thailand to Laos, you can either using only ID card (Thailand) or there is declaration form at the border. You can using those instead of Passport. According to Canada, you aren't allow to travel to Canada every routes without passport despite an airline, they won't let you board a flight if you don't have a passport.

This is incorrect. Flights between EU countries and even some other countries like Turkey are done just with an ID card. I've never used a passport for an inner-european flight ever.

The question was regarding travel to Canada. We can debate about which countries do or do not need passports to travel. But, for those planning on settling in Canada, I think each and everyone should be aware of the fact that Canada requires passport along with your PR card

There are indeed treaties signed by countries that allow their citizens travel across their borders without passport (e.g. Schengen area countries in Europe gives up border control)

As for Canada, everyone need a passport (plus others if applicable) to travel in and out of the country, doesn't matter if you're Canadian, PR or visitor.
