So if I can't move there full time for carious reasons, how can being there w/ a travel visa work?
You can visit Canada up to 6 months of the years just like Canadians can visit the US. You don’t need a visa if US citizen. Buy health insurance. You don’t get access to social or health services nor can children attend school. You are visitors.

Oh really? You don't have to do anything special then? So how can you get health insurance while there though?

You buy the insurance before you enter Canada. You need to search out policies. This is just like many Canadians live in Florida and Arizona for the winter months. They have homes there. But when you come to Canada you have no access to services. You are a visitor.

So how do you determine what's worthwhile, what is good insurance for Canada?

You have to compare insurance plans and decide on your own what you want to be covered for. If you don't know this answer yourself, best option is to get an insurance agent to help you explore the different options and how much each will cost you.

Health care is very expensive in Canada if you have to pay for it yourself. So you want to make sure you take insurance to cover yourself for emergencies. Normally insurance providers will not cover anything related to pre-existing conditions.

Typically insurance also does not cover any non emergency care. So you need to be prepared to pay for all of that yourself / out of pocket.

Yikes, I didn't realize that, what are some sites to look at or options to look over?

You decide on the medical needs of your family, and how much you think you need. Travel/health insurance is for emergency purposes not for general family doctor visits. Many credit cards have travel insurance for a fee. Or if you have private insurance through work, some out of country procedures may be covered like ER visit. So check your own policies too.
