Travel Restrictions?

Hello all.

Does anyone know if there are travel restrictions once you receive PR status in Ontario? I live only 2 hours from family and friends in Buffalo, NY, USA, and may want to travel outside of North America in the near future, but certainly dont want to plan anything if there are travel restrictions or if it is a complicated process once landed in Ontario as a Permanent Resident.
Any links or sources regarding this would be helpful as well. Thank you!

Once you land as a PR you will need a PR card or a PRTD to board a plane from outside Canada to return to Canada plus your passport of course . As a US citizen some PR posters have implied they boarded a plane from the US to Canada without a PR card but would not necessarily rely on that.

Without a PR card it is possible to enter back through the US/ Canada land border just with your COPR and passport.

Apart from that the only other thing to keep in mind is the residency obligation 2 years out of 5 in Canada, you are free to come and go as you want other than that.

Thank you. Your information and the link you provided were very helpful and have answered my question. It sounds like since I am a U.S. citizen, I can present my Nexus card at the border when travelling by car back into Canada as a PR and that will be good.

As a US citizen some PR posters have implied they boarded a plane from the US to Canada without a PR card but would not necessarily rely on that.

I'm not sure why you say that. US citizens are both eTA-exempt and visa-exempt, so they have no issues flying on just their passport even after they are PRs.

Yes, you are fine to enter at a land border without a PR card or PRTD. Also note that as a US citizen, you are fine to fly to Canada on the strength of just your passport. You do not need a PRTD or PR card.
