Hello all,

I am landing in BC very soon and looking for an insurance plan for my travel as well as initial 3 months waiting period. Can anyone suggest an insurance company/ plan from India? Is it advisable to get insured from an Indian insurance company?

I tried looking for some option at tugo.com and other Canada based insurance providers but they don't cover other expenses like baggage loss, etc.

Please give your valuable suggestions.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Do you mean that you never opted for any insurance cover for the initial waiting period or just the travel insurance?
I thought we must apply for the insurance for initial 3 months as Ontario and BC don't provide any insurance until 3 months after landing.

I would suggest go for the insurance.
If nothing happens, its good. But in case you need any medical assisstance, you will end up paying a lot more money than your insurance premium.

I took ICICI Lombard insurance when I came to Canada 2 years ago.
It costed me around INR 15000 for 3 months. Not sure what is the premium now.

Better to go with good banks in India so that you will not have any issues with claims (if need arises).

please buy travel insurance cover in india atleast till you intend to get medical insurance there. i hope you don't have claim but it always helps to have a cover. please note there could be deductibles while making a claim / duration to get your claims settled all that is a hassle with insurance claims nonetheless its always good to have insurance. forget about the premium.

While it's not mandatory to have insurance coverage it's suggested you get one in order to protect yourself against sickness/injury.

Canadian companies are usually preferable since they have established networks for direct billing allowing for cashless policies. So in the event of an emergency your insurance company will pay directly to the hospital/ medical services provider. This may not be the case with an overseas insurance provider making claims process more complicated.

The type of insurance suitable in this case is called Visitors to Canada. It covers new immigrants/visitors until they become eligible for provincial coverage.
