Any application I have seen does NOT ask for the copy of the passport to be translated. But better to be safe and check with the visa office.

Given the inconvenience of getting the translation in your case, I'd offer the visa office this solution. There are only a few words to be translated, so

1) go to http://ca.babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_txt

2) Translate the Spanish words into English.

3) Go to File, then Print, and you should see among the print options the following: Microsoft Office Document Image Writer. Select that option, and print.

4) Save the "printed" passport page in a folder you can find again (I established a folder for precisely this trpe of operation).

5) When you write the email to the Visa Office, attach this document as an illustration of an alternative to a formal (expensive ) translation.
 
We are just going to get it translated, to be sure, and then it will be done.
 
You need to translate ALL official documents that are not in English or French. So yes, you DO need to get your passport translated. And note that you need a certified (notarized) translation with a copy of the original. Babelfish is not going to cut it.
