Hi All
I am a British citizen and have visited Canada a number of times, as has my partner (we're not married). We're currently in the process of purchasing a holiday home in Fernie (BC) and intend to head out there in November and spend 6 months renovating it (on a tourist visa). Once our visa runs out, we'll head back to the UK and rent the house out. Ideally we'd really like to emigrate to Canada to live and work however we're unsure of what to apply for as I read different things wherever I look!
We wouldn't be able to get a BUNAC working visa as we are both 31 (upper age limit 30 on application). We both have 3 year university degrees/diplomas. My boyfriend is a QTP engineer (IT) and I guess I'd currently be classed as a community support worker (although I qualified as a midwife 2 years ago, there are no midwife jobs in the UK so I have been unable to practice post-qualifying and therefore wouldn't qualify to take a bridging programme in Canada to become a midwife there, which is a real shame as I know Canada welcome midwives). For the past 2 years I have worked for a charity, running a support service for 'troubled' pregnant teenagers. I also have 12 years experience as a secretary/executive assistant. I have a couple of questions and I'd be very grateful if anyone could take the time to advise me....
1. While we are in Fernie renovating our house, would it be a good idea to start looking for jobs and see if we can secure a job offer in order to begin the Skilled Worker process?
2. I noticed while I was in Fernie recently that pretty much every shop/store was advertising for staff. I know that in order to satisfy the HRDC, employers have to prove that they have been unable to find a Canadian citizen to fill the position. If these stores are unsuccessful in finding a Canadian citizen to fill the position, would they then be able to employ me for example? Or would it be the case that a grocery store (for example) would find it too much hassle to go through this process in order to employ a shelf stacker/casher?
3. If we applied for Permanent Residency, would we be 'allowed' to spend 6 months a year at our holiday home (providing we could prove we had the funds to support ourselves and didn't intend to work) until our application was processed or would Immigration Officials view that as suspicious or unacceptable - i.e. is there a limit on how often a UK citizen can obtain a 6 month tourist visa?
Many thanks in advance for your help!
