Good Day,

I'm a Canadian citizen who has been living in the UK for more than two years now. My wife is British and we plan to move to Canada early next year. I've been looking at the processing time of the individuals posting on this forum and it seems like the whole process takes less than six months. Is this fair to say? If so, is it too early for us to start going through the process in April 2010 if we won't be in Canada until March 2011? We don't have any children and we can stay with family when we land in Canada. I think our application should be quite straightforward but I don't want to be overconfident about it either.

Regarding the questions on the application that ask for all trips in the last 10 years, how strict is this? There isn't enough room on the application for me to list all the trips I've taken. I don't know if I can even remember all the trips I've taken in the last 10 years. Do they really need to know this?

Thanks for all your helpful posts!

Hi there,

I would definitely say apply now. Ours was very quick (just under 3 months total) but because on the CIC website it says it can take up to a year, it doesn't hurt to apply sooner rather than later. We're not moving for good until December and we applied in January of this year. You just need to be able to provide evidence that you'll be returning to Canada. For me, I had letters from family saying we could stay with them, letters from my family doctor and dentist saying they would be willing to take my husband on when we move and a couple of emails from prospective employers (nothing confirmed at all, though).

Your wife's visa will be valid until a year after the date of her medical, so as long as you intend on landing before that date then everything should be fine. Also - you can always 'land' and then come back if need be. For example, we're landing in June but then coming back for 6 months to tie everything up before heading out for Christmas.

Which form are you looking at for filling out trips taken in the last 10 years? I definitely don't remember filling that out - if you post the form and question number, happy to have a look at what I put on mine.

Best of luck and here's hoping everything goes smoothy (and quickly!) for you!
:)

it can also take much longer than you might think to put together all the documents, get the medical done, get the police certificates, etc. etc...so it doesn't hurt to start now - it took my husband and I about 3 months to finish everything.

if there isn't enough room on the form to answer a question, just attach a seperate sheet and answer there. yes, do include as much info as possible to avoid them coming back to you later asking for more information. :)

Totally agree - it took us a good few months to finally get it all together and sorted, so really best to start sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the helpful responses. Okay, good to know.

I might be getting confused with the trips in the last 10 years. My wife will have to fill that out and not me I guess. I was confusing it with listing all my jobs in the last five years on the sponsor questionnaire.

Good tip about the landing and coming back as well.

Police certificate? Oh yeah... that's going to take a few weeks. :(

Thanks for the quick feedback!
