Many people have an issue to link the paper application of permanent residence under family sponsorship category to CIC online account. If this is the case for you, please read the following tips.
1. The information you use to search for your application is about the applicant, not the sponsor.
2. Anyone can link the application to his/her online account, as long as he/she can find the application in their system. It does not have to be linked the applicant and/or sponsor's account, and the application can be linked to more than one account.
3. When you type your information like last name and city/town of birth, they are not case sensitive. So if you could not find your application, the case is not the reason and you do not need to waste one attempt to change between upper/lower case letters. Nevertheless, I would suggest using CAPITAL letters for both to avoid any potential issues.
4. After they receive your paper application, they will do a screening first and they may change the information you provided if it is not accurate. So if you have trouble to link your application it is most likely because the information in their system is different from the information you submitted. The most commonly changed information are:
a) city/town of birth: make any reasonable guess that how did they change this field, e.g, they might have your province in their system, although what you provided is your city/town. Alternatively, you may skip and read my tip 5.
b) number of family members: this number includes the sponsor, so if one is sponsoring his/her spouse and their is no kid, the correct number should be two, regardless what you wrote on your paper application.
5. For applicant's personal information, their system seems to ask you to provide both the place of birth and passport information, which is actually misleading. In fact, you only need to complete one section, either the place of birth or passport. DO NOT complete both. If you are not sure about city/town, leave the place of birth blank and complete passport information only. If you have trouble to select passport information, you can leave the passport section blank and only provide your place of birth.
Hope these tips can help.
