My hubby (the American) has been trying to find work in Canada since he finished university here, about 5 years ago, with no luck. I think the difficulty of this depends on what kind of work you are looking for, there are not that many job in the US in his field either.

Ideally, I'm looking for research scientist/associate/assistant positions, in academia, hospital settings, or pharma... data analyst or medical writing positions... as a second-to-last resort, postdoctoral positions... at this point, as a last resort, I'd be happy doing data entry for $15 an hour. However, then I'll run into the "overqualified" dilemma, and I'm fairly sure they wouldn't even consider hiring me.

(my degree is in Experimental Psychology, but most of my graduate and postgraduate experience is in MRI research)

@eletyl, try the link I posted, there are many professional listings on the site, it is a government funded job bank. Or depending on where you reside, you can look up the local health authority as they post positions on there as well. Good luck. Try the universities as well!

You should try google alerts also. Include all the keywords for the job you're searching for, along with the city you will be living in and 'jobs'. Google will email you any articles, news pages, postings and blog entries related to your criteria.

Eletyl, have you tried contacting professors directly? Sometimes they are thinking of hiring someone, but do not get around to posting it. I know a few people who got positions as technicians this way in the life sciences (I know you are overqualified to be a technician).

mossee: thanks! looks like the link takes you to Emploi Quebec's site, which I do check periodically. :)

chinook65: I do check Google periodically with the appropriate keywords, but I didn't know about the alert system. thank you for tip. :)

kayan: right! yes, I've done that a couple of time, a few months ago. I've had meetings with several professors as a result, and they were nice contacts to make - and who knows, it may payoff at some point in the future - but this time around, the timing just did not work out well (i.e. they won't be looking for a postdoc until next fall, or next year). the problem with academia is that funding is soft, and usually earmarked very specifically; it's hard to find someone with grants lying around, flexible enough to be used for any purpose (i.e. if I show up asking for a job). it usually takes lots of advance planning. nonetheless, it is a good reminder, and it's probably time that I try making the rounds again...

Just a quick question:

So when my husband lands in Canada, I don't believe that we will have a permanent place to live yet, so it would not be ideal to bring over all his furnishings etc. and we have free storage at his parents place, so bringing it over to store is not something we want to do either. I've caught glimpses of people mentioning a "Goods to follow" list. Does that mean he can land without his possessions and bring them over at a later time as long as we have this "list?"

Thanks!

Hey all,

I was hanging out in the January thread but it's getting awfully quiet over there ::).

Even though we sent off our app in January, it wasn't received until Feb 9, so I'm probably more of a February applicant.

The whole switch to a new computer system seems awfully inconsistent... we received our AOR from Buffalo 11 days after the sponsorship approval, so you would think that we are among the first people in the new system, but still haven't heard a thing from them since then.

Sparkle, I'm in the spreadsheet already but you can put me down for AOR on Mar. 20.

David, did you get the official aor (usually an email) with your visa office file number? Or just the ecas update saying buffalo received the file in buffalo in March?

Tiggilicious, it was just the E-CAS update, no email or letter from Buffalo. We have a client ID # from the Sponsorship Approval letter, but nothing else.

Dare I ask what the difference is?

E cas update is just a notification that application was received. When you get an email from Buffalo, that would be the official AOR with applicant file # and the fact that your file has been created

Yeah, that's what I was curious about as I know most people get the "application received" on ecas within a couple of weeks .

On a side note, buffalo responded to my email with info!
I asked them for my file number as I haven't got an aor yet, and I wanted to send his birth certificate in. They emailed me back with the f# and a b#. am I supposed to have two??
I logged into his ecas and it still only says apication received (which is the same info I get on mine when I look on the applicant side). So I'm wondering what's up with that if it means were in process and we just didn't get the email? Or If u get a file # even before being in process?
