Unless you have spent some time in Canada, I would wait to choose your language stream, especially if you can only choose one. I've been here off and on for a little while, and I'm not sure how important French actually is, unless of course you are in Quebec/NB. Here in Ontario, 99% of people use English every day and I hardly hear any French. Maybe increasing your level in English to be 100% fluent would actually be a better benefit? I speak a little French, and it took me 8 months of classes to learn and I haven't used it much since I've been in Canada. To use it at the level required for a government job would take years and years.

Not saying it's not good/fun/useful to learn French, but I wouldn't pick just learning a little French over perfecting English. Either way though, free classes are a great offer, when I get my PR, maybe I will take up French again just for fun

I've been in Canada a year now and I hardly hear French in Ontario... but I'm going to take classes if they are free to learn to go with the other languages I have learned so I can put it on my resume since I'm fluent in English (native language). I've heard that if you speak (like conversational) you can get $5 over minimum wage to start at some jobs or more.. especially if it's a skilled worker job.

Any government job , tourism job, hotel and hospitality, french and english is usually required as they are our 2 languages here. In Ontario you have a lot of french close to the border QC/ONT in Toronto some in Ottawa a lot and in sudbury..... just because they speak english to you doesn't mean they don't speak french :)

We have french classes available in quebec for free. Check tyour local employment office.

17 business days since my PPR was received by Fort Erie, no activation on tracking yet. They are really going to drag this out. :-[

Yeah, I've met a few people who talk about knowing it even though they use English. I'm staying/living in the Hamilton/Toronto area so it'll prove beneficial to have. I'm an illustrator so no government job, but it's still a bonus. Never know what the future holds anyways. I never thought I'd be trying to immigrate here 2 years ago.

Can someone answer these questions please?

1. When you get your PPR. How long do you have to officially "move\land" to Canada? I'd like to go traveling with my wife for 3 months before she moves here.

2. Will she have to pay import taxes\duty for her car? We'd like to bring her car to Canada if possible.

Thanks!

1. It will say on the visa or COPR. Generally it's one year following medical.

2. Can't say for sure, but if the car is from the US, chances are "no" if contacting the port of entry and following their directions before simply landing with vehicle in possession.

Hi,

Does anyone know what is the procedure for getting SIN number in canada?

I am right now in USA and as soon as I get my PPR I want to land and get SIN number so that I can go for an interview

Please advise

Note that for #2, the vehicle must be on the B4 (there's a special section for vehicles on the B4 form itself) for it to be tax exempt and, if it is, you can import it either at time of landing or afterwards (e.g, if you landed by plane and later drive up the car or if you land by plane and ship the car it's not a big deal).

The fastest way is to go to a Service Canada office with your application and documents - details @ http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sc/sin/index.shtml. They will give you your SIN number on the spot.

The medical was already done and sent in at the same time off the app? (February this year)

Bargeld was saying that the expiration to land is usually a year from when you got your medical done...so Feb 2013.
